Dry-docking Operation in Dubai

On November 14, 2012, Eversafe Engineering Company, affiliated with Qingdao Evergreen Maritime, successfully completed the dry-docking operation of “Mosa” ,a ro-ro ship, in the UAE. The Ro-Ro ship IMO number 9120396, with a total length of 140 meters, 16.6 meters wide, 8.1 meters deep, the actual weight of 3200 tons.

The Ro-Ro Mosa was built in 1994, classified as BV and owned by Faraj Marine Shipping. In order to adapt to market demand, the shipowner considered making changes to the vessel, including shortening the hull by 20 meters and replacing engines and propellers.

Ali & Sons Marine Engineering won the bid for the Mosa refit project in June 2012. Ali & Sons is a large group company in the Middle East, involved in real estate, cars, hotels and other fields. Its Maritime Engineering Company was formed in 2009 and is the largest shipbuilding enterprise in the Abu Dhabi region.

In mid-October 2012, Qingdao Eversafe Company officially signed a contract with Ali & Sons Maritime Engineering. Eversafe is responsible for providing services such as the general design and on-site guidance and management of marine airbags as well as dry-docking ships of the project.

On 28 October 2012, a five-member technical team from Eversafe travelled to the UAE. On the morning of the 29th, Eversafe engineers officially entered Ali & Sons Maritime Engineering Company and began their intense work. The results of on-site inspection of the ramp and equipment surprised Eversafe engineers: due to the client’s small project cost budget, the ramp construction did not meet the design standards; In addition, pulleys, wire ropes and other equipment cannot meet the requirements.

Following urgent consultations with the client’s project manager, we made proposals to maximize the use of existing equipment and to find ways to lease other critical equipment. Thanks to joint efforts with customers, all equipment was ready on November 6.

Work on the dry-docking of the Mosa officially began on November 7. After three days of intensive work on 7, 8 and 9, the dry-docking airbags were all in place, and the Mosa was safely lifted from the air bags and smoothly ascended to the ramp. The Eversafe team overcame various unfavorable factors such as the small local tidal gradient and the subsidence of the ramp and successfully completed the ship’s dry-docking.

” After the “Mosa” was placed on the ramp, the client began cutting the stern of the ship. During this period, our technicians cooperated with the customer and adjusted the bow and tail levels of the ship through various technical means, ensuring the safe and smooth completion of the cutting work.

From November 12, the Eversafe team instructed the client to begin the work of raising the hull and laying the docking support. In order to facilitate the follow-up work, the client requested that the hull level rise to a height of 1.4 meters. After calculations, we formulated detailed plans at the site and successfully completed the lifting of the hull. On the afternoon of the 14th, 84 supporting blocks of the hull were placed, after which the airbags slowly discharged and the hull landed smoothly on the blocks.

The project pioneered the use of airbags(https://www.maritime-group.cn/products/marine-airbags/ship-drydocking-hauling-airbags/) on ships with more than 1,000 tons in the Middle East and received widespread attention from industry insiders and the press. Three local shipyards sent technicians to the site, and Abu Dhabi TV kept a 24-hour tracking of the project and reported on the project in local news.

During the execution of the project, the Eversafe technical team was able to overcome various unfavorable factors such as the site and equipment and successfully completed the project. On the one hand, we benefit from solid basic skills, rich experience accumulation, and can handle various unexpected events: on the other hand, the team’s tenacity and indomitable mental will enable us to overcome difficulties and win victory.
